WS Heritage can procure comprehensive archaeological investigation, evaluation and excavation services, from preliminary site investigations, watching briefs and geophysical surveys through to trial trenching, strip, map and sample and full excavation.
We have detailed knowledge of the delivery of NEC and other contracts using industry leading project and programme management, including producing and analysing primavera P6 compliant programmes to ensure the interests of both clients and contractors are given due weight in the delivery of major contracts.
Our experienced team designs, negotiates and manages appropriate strategies in consultation with clients, contractors and Local Planning Authorities, preparing Written Schemes of Investigation (WSIs), supervising fieldwork and monitoring visits, and providing cost-effective solutions to minimise disruption to development programmes.
Where significant remains are identified, we procure trusted contractors to carry out methodical excavation and recording, and oversee the delivery of detailed, compliant, peer reviewed reports, supported by specialist analysis, leading to archive deposition and secure the discharge of planning conditions.
WS Heritage’s Archaeology Desk-Based Assessment service identifies known heritage assets and assesses the likelihood of archaeological remains within and around a proposed development site. Drawing on Historic Environment Records, historic mapping, aerial photography and other documentary sources, the assessment evaluates potential impacts and recommends appropriate mitigation. ADBA’s support planning applications and Environmental Impact Assessments, Construction Environment Management Plans (CEMP), DCO applications for NSIP help satisfy Local Planning Authority pre-application requirements and can inform developers of archaeological risk during site acquisition or master planning. The assessment provides early, clear advice to help manage heritage risks and inform planning decisions, including potential archaeological conditions.
WS Heritage Archaeology provide early pre-application advice to help establish a site’s archaeological potential and identify key sensitivities or showstoppers at an early stage of the planning process. This may include reviewing the likely requirement for archaeological desk-based assessments, survey reports, Written Schemes of Investigation, trench plans and reports from intrusive fieldwork. The advice is intended to inform early understanding of archaeological constraints, including areas that may require exclusion from development, rather than to advise on detailed design or mitigation, which should be addressed through the Local Planning Authority and its Historic Environment Planning Team.
WS Heritage provides expert management of Programmes of Archaeological Work where archaeology or heritage assets may be affected by development. From defining appropriate investigation and mitigation strategies through a focused Written Scheme of Investigation, to managing works such as geophysical surveys, historic building recording, trial trenching, evaluation and excavation, our experienced archaeological specialists coordinate trusted multidisciplinary teams to deliver efficient, proportionate and targeted solutions. Acting as lead project managers, we oversee works from inception through completion, balancing the requirements of the historic environment with the needs of development while ensuring all archaeological and heritage interests are appropriately investigated, recorded and managed.
Programmes of Archaeological Work are typically required as a condition of planning consent where development has the potential to impact known or suspected archaeology or heritage. They may be required to establish the presence or absence of archaeological remains or to investigate and mitigate the impacts of development. Works are usually agreed in advance with the Local Planning Authority or relevant national heritage body and undertaken in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation and Chartered Institute for Archaeologists standards and guidance.
WS Heritage provides archaeological survey, recording and reporting services to help developers identify, assess and record archaeological features that may affect a proposed development. Our surveys combine desktop research with detailed site assessments, considering factors such as aerial photography, LIDAR, earthworks, contours, previous building plans, walkover observations and both above- and below-ground remains. We help identify potential archaeological constraints early, supporting informed planning decisions and reducing the risk of unexpected issues during development, with the scope of each survey tailored to the site and project requirements.
WS Heritage provides professionally prepared Written Schemes of Investigation (WSIs) for archaeological watching briefs, evaluations, excavations, historic building work and non-intrusive surveys such as geophysics and fieldwalking. Our WSIs define the scope, methodology and research aims of archaeological and built heritage investigations, drawing on site-specific evidence, professional standards and local authority requirements.
We provide expert advice and consultation to support efficient approvals and cost-effective solutions, with WSIs covering investigation and recording methods, staffing and specialist input, public engagement, contingency arrangements, archiving, publication, and health and safety requirements.
