Channing School in Highgate, London N6
Project Outline
Channing House School was established in the late 19th century. Encompassing numerous historic buildings, this is located within Highgate Conservation Area (Haringey) designated in 1967. Two, Grade II listed, mid-19th century buildings – Slingley and Westview – designated in 1974, are an integral part of the school complex. The site also lies within the settings of numerous other designated and locally recognised heritage assets and is therefore heavily constrained from a perspective of heritage.
The first phase of proposals was submitted on 27th December 2023 and addressed the redevelopment of Brunner House, a modern, non-designated part of the school complex built in 1985 but within the immediate rear setting of Grade II listed Slingley and Westview etc. Works included a 3-storey extension, more general refurbishment, and the extensive alteration of façades along with associated landscaping.
Remaining proposals were submitted on 9th April 2024 and entailed more direct intervention into the main school buildings, including those designated in their own right. This included the reconfiguration of floorplates; a lift to all levels; a rear dormer roof extension; a basement and ground floor rear glazed extension; the extensive restoration of internal details; and widespread landscaping.
Together, proposals sought to not only rationalise and improve circulation, connectivity functioning and access (and by these means, more general operation), but add further useable floorspace, achieved by fundamentally high quality design approaches that enhance the listed buildings, their curtilage and immediate settings. Eroded interiors were also restored and enhanced.
