Channing School in Highgate, London N6
Project Outline
Channing House School is opened in a late 19th century building which replaced a late Georgian House. It is not listed in its own right, however it is located within the Highgate Conservation Area (Haringey) designated in 1967. It also lies within the setting of Grade II listed buildings, specifically Slingley and Westview, built in the mid-19th century and designated in 1974, now serve as part of the Main School building of the Channing School. Despite these constraints, the first part of proposals submitted on 27th December 2023 addressed intervention on Brunner House (part of the school building built in 1985, non-designated), including 3-storey extension, roof extension, refurbishment, and façade alterations with associated landscaping. This part of application was granted on 3rd July 2024.
The remaining part of proposals submitted on 9th April 2024 is a more direct intervention into the historic environment, addressed alterations on the row of Main School buildings, which included the reconfiguration of floorplates and access route with a lift to all levels, a rear dormer roof extension on Channing House (immediate adjacent and attached to Slingley and Westview), a basement and ground floor rear glazed extension to the main school, heritage restoration works and landscape alterations. The whole scheme seeks to utilise the opportunity to add further useable space, to enhance the existing nondescript and/or eroded features, and to largely improve the internal circulation, connectivity, functioning, and accessibility of the school.
