78 Marine Parade in Worthing, West Sussex

Constructed in the early 19th century, the site forms a part of three, much altered and subdivided terraced houses comprising nos. 77-79 Marine Parade. Designated a Grade II listed building in 1949, the three properties also reside within the Marine Parade and Hinterland Conservation Area, designated in 2000.

Here, in light of potential enforcement action being undertaken by the local authority, retrospective listed building consent was sought for unauthorised works undertaken to one of no. 78’s component apartments in early 2023. These included the relocation of kitchen and bathroom and the removal of associated, non-original partition walls, along with the replacement of non-original front windows with double-glazed timber casements.

Given the already much evolved status of the site and therefore the non-original status of fabric preceding these works – coupled with intensifying policy objectives in relation to matters of sustainability – WS Heritage successfully negotiated listed building consent for these works, with the application being submitted on the 31st July 2023.
