Lawson’s Farm in West Sussex
Project Outline
Lawson’s Farm is a 17th century building designated Grade II in 1980. Following the withdrawal of an earlier application in 2023, this application was configured in close consultation with local authority officers and submitted on 1st March 2024.
In order to increase living space and enhance functioning across the property for a growing family, the amended scheme included a part-single and part two-storey extension projecting from the rear via a glazed link.
This was coupled with the external refurbishment of the listed building including the replacement of non-original windows with those of a more appropriate design. By utilising the topography of the site and managing scale and mass, the extension remained subservient to the host.
Given its rural context, the design also took its lead from modern agricultural development, whilst ensuring a necessary degree of separation and, in accordance with best conservation practice, further ensuring a clearly legible distinction between old and new phases.
