Reigate Tunnel in Reigate, Surrey

Project Outline

Built in 1823, Grade II listed Reigate Tunnel is the oldest road tunnel in the United Kingdom and was first listed Grade II in 1989. It is also located in Reigate Conservation Area.

With 2023 and the 200th anniversary of the tunnel, Reigate Business Guild sought to commemorate and celebrate the tunnel’s importance both historically and architecturally, and with respect to its significance from an engineering and geological perspective.

Reigate Business Guild therefore instructed the WS Heritage and WS Planning to seek listed building consent to install a 200th anniversary plaque on the western elevation of the Tunnel Road’s southern entrance.
