Non-designated heritage assets are buildings, sites, landscapes or features of heritage interest that don’t meet criteria for designation but merit material consideration in the planning process. They are usually identified by local planning authorities, often through Local Lists.
Assessing the significance of a non-designated heritage asset is much like assessment of designated heritage assets however, and based upon an understanding of evidential, historical, aesthetic or communal value. Historic England’s Conservation Principles (2008) provides further detail in this respect.
