CONSERVATION AREAS

Conservation areas are places of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance, and which are also protected under the 1990 Act.

They may be designated by local authorities, Historic England (in London), or the Secretary of State, and England has around 10,000. However, designation requires clear justification to preserve genuine historic or architectural value.
